Verna A. Lawrence , 96, formerly of East Broad Street, West Hazleton, died Saturday morning at St. Luke Pavilion, Hazleton, where she was a guest.

Born in Hazle Brook, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Rentko) Yackshaw, a member of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic (Slovak) Church, Hazleton, a charter member of the Confraternity of Christian Women and a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, both of the parish. She resided in the Greater Hazleton area all of her life and was a member of the All-American Senior Citizens. Prior to retiring, she was employed in the area garment industry and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Frank J. Lawrence, Sept. 17, 1996; brothers, John and Stephen Yackshaw and a sister, Mary Y. Novatnak. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are her son, Francis J. Lawrence , Bowie, Md.; one grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. from the John J. Pusti Funeral Home, 480 W. Broad St., Hazleton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Trinity R.C. (Slovak) Church. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home this evening from 4 to 7 p.m. A prayer service will be conducted.
