Lorraine Lax aged 38 Yrs, a miner of Sheffield. He and his wife Elizabeth (Nee Bedford), aged about 30 yrs, rented a room in a boarding house, in Rippon Street, Attercliffe. They had been married, in Sheffield, in 1920, but the marriage was a stormy one resulting in several separations. On the morning of 31st August 1925, after a quarrel over money, he cut his wife's throat with a razor. He then tried to take his own life with the same razor, but was unsuccessful. A man who lived in the next room heard the disturbance and went to see what was wrong. He found her body lying on the bed covered in blood. Lorraine Lax had gone to the police station to give himself up. He was charged with the murder of his wife.

At his trial at the Leeds Assizes on the 1st December 1925, before Mr Justice Fraser, he was found guilty and sentenced to death.

On the 7th January 1926, Thomas Pierrepoint, assisted by William Willis, executed him.
