NELSON — Former Chico resident Constance Nelson, 89, of Provo, Utah, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, in Provo, Utah. Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, Orem, Utah, (801) 226-3500.

Since people have always said I like having the last word, I feel it is only appropriate for me to write my own obituary. My family can "fill in the blank" with my actual death date and other details.
I was born in Payson, Utah, on March 31, 1944. Actually my mother, Naomi Harmer Clegg, was living in Virginia at the time of her pregnancy, but she returned to live with her parents since my father, Reed Luke Clegg, was serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was shipped to China at the time of my birth. I was blessed with a rich heritage and wonderful parents who provided me with an idyllic childhood. We moved often (21 times during the first 21 years of my life) due to Daddy's military service and subsequent job opportunities but my parents always made every place we lived the "best place on earth" and I always felt happy and secure.
After graduating as Valedictorian at Iron Mountain High School in Michigan, I attended Brigham Young University and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree, though I really went to college for my "Mrs." Degree. I met my husband, Stevens Call Nelson, in a sociology class and we were married on December 18, 1964 in the Salt Lake Temple. He has been a wonderful companion and helpmate. I couldn't have asked for better. We were ecstatic when we were able to adopt our children, twin sons Stevens Brett and Bradley Call in 1966 and our daughter Candacee in 1970, but we soon learned that parenting was the greatest challenge we would face in life. I may not have been the best mother on earth, but I know that nobody tried harder.
During my lifetime I have held many leadership positions (President of PTA, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Relief Society and Young Women) and garnered several honors, which were nice but in the eternal scheme of things are not very important. I have learned that the most important things in life are relationships and service to others. I treasure the friends I have made throughout my years and value my extended family. My greatest joy has been found in serving others, and my husband and I enjoyed our mission together in the Florida Tallahassee Mission. I have had life-changing experiences as we sponsored over 100 refugees from the Vietnam War countries and learned how blessed we are to live in the United States. I love my family, my country, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I have been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have a testimony of my Savior which has helped get me through many trials. I have had some prayers left unanswered but I have also experienced many miracles. I know I am a child of God and death is not the end but a beginning of a great new adventure living in the presence of my Father in Heaven.
I am survived by my husband and three children: Steve, Brett, Brad (Melissa), and Candee (Jason) McKnight and by my father Reed Luke Clegg and three siblings: Carolyn Clegg Lloyd (Ronald Bruce), Kenneth Reed Clegg (JoAnn Hall) and Marcia Clegg Bean (Stephen). I am also survived by nine grandchildren. My mother predeceased me. I appreciate the associations I have had and are grateful for the influence each of you have had on my life. I have been blessed.
A viewing will be held at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home located at 646 East 800 North, Orem, Utah on Wednesday, October 30, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The funeral will be held at the Sharon East Stake Center located at 2400 North 1060 East in Provo, Utah, on Thursday, October 31, at 10:00 pm preceded by a viewing from 8:30 am to 9:45 am at the church. Since I am allergic to flowers (and everything else in life), in lieu of flowers I would appreciate you donating to the Humanitarian Fund or the Perpetual Education Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or to the Provo Pioneer Village of the Sons of Utah Pioneers.
