She was born on Nov. 17, 1913, to John and Magdalena "Lena" (Martini) Althoff, in Adrian, Minn., and was one of 11 children. The family purchased a farm in Mooreton, N.D., when she was a baby. As a young lady, she was a housekeeper for Rev. Baskerville and then for Rev. Funk in Fosston where she met Leo Killian. They were married on Aug. 30, 1945. They lived a short time in Park Rapids and then moved to Bemidji purchasing a farm south of town where they raised dairy cattle and later potatoes.
She was a working partner on the farm and spent many hours working in the fields, milking cows and running to town for parts. They also provided loving care for many foster children over the years with two sisters, Wilma and Wanda, becoming very special daughters. She was active in St. Philip's Church, the Catholic Society of Foresters, as well as the Carr Lake Farmers Club where for many years she was instrumental in preparing a fair booth for the Beltrami County fair. She also loved visiting friends, playing cards, quilting, gardening, sewing, cooking and baking. She was well known for her homemade bread and hearty meals for her family and the hired farm hands.
She is survived by her husband of Bemidji; daughter, Kathleen (Timothy) Hughes of Bemidji; son, Alan (Judy) Killian of Bemidji; foster daughters, Wilma Wilkins of St. Paul and Wanda Wilkins of Fargo; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Lawrence (Nell) Althoff of Lake Forest, Calif., Carolyn Althoff of Grand Forks, N.D., Dorothy (Joseph) German of Hankinson, N.D., Loretta (William) Bernard of Mooreton, Leo (Loretta) Althoff of Mooreton and Joseph (Virginia) Althoff of Oxnard, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and three sisters.
