Jake worked on various farms around Markham until he decided to become a veterinarian, and graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1889. He practiced in Ontario and then went to Maysville, Kentucky in Feb 1891,
Jake married Sophia Doan Oct 14, 1891 in Cinncinnati, Ohio. In Kentucky, Jake's business was mostly with horses, but horses weren't selling and it became impossible for him to collect his bills, so they decided to leave. Sophia's brother, J. E. Doan, had homesteaded in Innisfail, so they wrote and asked him to file a homestead for them. Jake, Sophia, and their infant son, Jacob Doan, left Kentucky Aug 1, 1895, visited in Ontario and left for the west Sep 17, 1895. Along with farming, Jake continued to practice veterinary work for some years, going beyond Red Deer, Innisfail and Pine Lake.
Jacob and Sophia's first son, Jacob Doan (known as Doan), was born in Maysville, Kentucky on Feb 12, 1894. Doan was killed in action in Belgium, June 3, 1916.
