HUDSON and DEXTER - Mary Ellen Braley, 78, died quietly and peacefully Sept. 13, 2009, at a Dexter health care facility. She was born Aug. 16, 1931, in Bangor, the daughter of Leon and Jennie (Curtis) Dearborn. Mary and her husband, Lawrence, raised their own sheep and goats for many years. They nursed them with a bottle, shaved their wool, dyed the wool and spun the yarn. Many people were lucky to receive her mittens, sweaters and socks. Mary enjoyed going to the fairs with her spinning wheel and talking with people about the process. There are many wonderful memories of Mary and Lawrence going to the Elks Club for the weekend dances. She was a wonderful mother, wife, sister and grandmother and will be dearly missed. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Lawrence Braley in 1999; her brother, Robert Dearborn; and her granddaughter, Jenni Bemis in 2000. She is survived by her son, Keith Bemis and wife, Rose, of Etna; Keith's son, Trevor Bemis and wife, Kim and their son, Xander, who is Mary's only great-grandson, of Newport; son, Larry Bemis and wife, Annette, of Etna; and son, David Bemis of Skowhegan and his sons, Leon and Danny. A graveside funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Hudson Village Cemetery with the Rev. Garnett Chute, pastor of Hermon Baptist Church, officiating. Gifts in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 170 U.S. Route One, Suite 250, Falmouth, ME 04105. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
