The Fresno Bee (Fresno, California) Wednesday, December 29, 2010:
Claudy Ray Walls
Ray Walls, an honorable and heroic husband, was born in Geary, Oklahoma on July 24, 1936,...one of nine children born to Minnie and John Walls. He passed away on Wednesday, December 22, 2010. He spent most of his adult years in California. For 28 years he has lived in Fresno, Ca. Ray is a 20 year veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served before and after the Vietnam War. He served on various ships (one of which was The USS Toledo).
Before his retirement in January 1997, he was a 21 year employee at the Veterans' Hospital in Fresno as a maintenance mechanic. Ray had two passions in his later life. The first was motorcycles. He was an active member of the Northern California Voyagers Motorcycle Club which he founded in 2000. He spent dedicated hours planning monthly rides, activities and yearly vacations throughout the western states. His second passion was giving to everyone and anyone who he perceived was in need. He supported numerous organizations with donations including the Fresno County Firefighters, Moose International, The Salvation Army, Cal Farley Boy's Ranch near Amarillo, Texas to mention only a few. At Thanksgiving and Christmas as an active member of various groups there were drives for food and other gifts. He and others personally delivered donations to those in need. Family, friends and associates could count on Ray to provide help repairing motorcycles and cars. He was ready and able at a moments call to do plumbing, electrical or construction work on any and all types of facilities. It was a family fact that before he went to visit, he would call ahead of time to find out what was needed in order to have the correct tools for that days request. Ray was an active member of the Fresno Moose Family Center 445 holding various offices throughout the years. One of his last, extensive, donations of time and talent was spent remodeling the present location of the Moose's Lodge at the former Palm Lakes Golf Course Coffee Shop facility. Throughout the spring and summer months of 2007 he donated every waking hour to the preparation of this facility for use by the members. When the facility was in full operation breakfasts were served each Sunday and one could find Ray in the kitchen every Sunday morning washing dishes. His heroism was observed by family and friends after he suffered a motorcycle accident at the conclusion of the yearly Voyagers vacation on September 6, 2008. After almost seven months of major surgeries and rehabilitation, Ray returned home for a brief two years. His final act of heroism resulted in his extraordinary months struggle upon receiving the devastating news of lung disease. His last days were spent in the CICU at St. Agnes Medical Center. We say goodbye in gratitude and love to a most honorable and heroic man. A word of gratitude is extended to his doctors-Dr. Rendoll Concepcion, Robert Bennett (office staff: Amanda and Alisha) and A.P. Mello. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Herbert Walls. Ray is survived by his wife, Betty Menezes-Walls; seven siblings all living out of Ca., Clarence Walls, Roy Walls, Nelda Lewis, Bobby Walls, Melba Salas, Linda Indridason and Lola Walls; two sons, Lonnie Walls-Caldwell and Phillip Walls; three grandchildren, Benjiman, Christopher and Clay Caldwell; two great-grandchildren; many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Church of Living Water on Wednesday, December 29, 2010, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life. Donations may be made to Cal Farley Boy's Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, Texas 79174; and St. Agnes Medical Center, Fresno Ca. SERENITY FUNERAL SERVICE 5042 North Fresno Street Fresno, California (559)244-6330
