John J. Carroll, of East Tawas, Michigan died June 11, 2003 at the age of 83.

Born December 25, 1919 in Detroit to John H. Carroll of Brockton MA and Margaret M. (Slattery) Carroll of Bay City, MI, John was the husband of Catherine (Goetz) Carroll.

He served his country with distinction as a World War II fighter pilot, flying the P-38 Lightning in the U.S. Army Air Force with the 38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force based at RAF Nuthampsted, England. On Nov 29, 1943 he was shot down over Germany and held as a Prisoner of War at Stalag Luft 1. Captain Carroll earned the Purple Heart and the U.S. Air Force Air Medal.

Mr. Carroll was a graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a member of the U of M Alumni Association. He was also Stadium Announcer for U of M Football games. In addition, he was the Program Director/Announcer for WUOM, Ann Arbor, an Account Executive for WHRV Ann Arbor, and Vice President of Knorr Broadcasting, Inc., Stations WKMH/WKNR in Detroit WQLB-FM Tawas and WKJZ-FM, Alpena.

Mr. Carroll's civic memberships included the American Legion Post, Oscoda; Knights of Columbus (4th degree), Cheboygan, MI; V.F.W. Post, Oscoda; the Detroit Athletic Club, the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the ADCRAFT Club of Detroit, and the Crisis Club of Detroit.

John J. Carroll leaves his beloved wife of 57 years, Catherine, seven children, nine grandchildren, and a brother.
