J. Elder Bryan
Joseph Elder Bryan, 90, of 2509 N. Mercer St., died at 8 pm Sunday in the Overlook Medical Clinic, Inc, in New Wilmington, 10 days after suffering a stroke at his law office.
Bryan was born Aug. 21, 1882 in Volant to the late Joseph Sutlin and Jane Elder Bryan.
He was a local attorney, a member of the First Alliance Church; the New Castle Masonic Lodge No. 642 and Past Master of that lodge; the New Castle Sportsman's Club and a life member of the Coachman's Club.
Bryan was a 1906 graduate of Grove City College and has been an attorney in this area for 61 years.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth E. Callahan, whom he married Sept 12, 1917; two daughters, Mrs. Jane Bryan Lynch and Miss Ruth Anne Bryan, both of New Castle; a son, J. Elder Bryan Jr. of Downey, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Louise Bryan in 1928; a sister, Mrs. Lulu Schretrom; and a brother, George P. Bryan.
Friends may call from 7-9 pm today and from 2-4 and 7-9 pm tomorrow at the Raymond D Cunningham Funeral Home at 2429 Wilmington Road where a service will be held at 11 am Thursday with the Rev. M.E. Nicholson of the First Alliance Church officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
The family has requested that contributions be made to the Cancer Society in Mr. Bryan's name.
