Obituary from NRToday.com

Norris Monroe Johnson 93, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away on August 5, 2010.

He was born to Samuel Monroe Johnson and Gertrude Clara (Dahle) Johnson in Staples, Minnesota, on November 23, 1916.

He married Dorothy Esta Kirsch, on November 25, 1937. Theirs was a very loving 72+ year union.

In his early adult years Norris farmed; insulated and roofed with his father and brother in Minnesota; worked in a sugar beet factory in North Dakota; then, in 1951, moved his family to Oregon where he did millwork while building up his roofing and insulating business. He was well known and respected for his business integrity and excellent workmanship. He employed, and shared his great work ethic with many high school and college age young men.

He had a terrific singing voice and loved to entertain with his many songs and, it seems, billions of jokes and stories.

He retired his business in 1985. He spent many years as a member of the Roseburg Moose Lodge, the Sutherlin Senior Center, where he was repeatedly elected president of the Board, and The Umpqua Fisherman's Association, where he and Dorothy worked so tirelessly at the Cooper Creek Egg & Fish Rearing Facility that it was dedicated to them in 2000. He also served for many years on the Calapooia Fire Board.

Norris's hobbies included hunting, fishing, raising a large vegetable garden, bowling, and inventing. He worked, for a number of his recent years, on a machine to produce electricity from the movement of ocean waves, just as OSU was doing the same.

He was preceded in death by a baby daughter, Barbara; his parents; two sisters, Elsie and Mildred; two brothers, Arthur and Douglas; one step-brother; and by his son, Larry Johnson who passed away June 26, 2010 of an accidental drowning while scuba diving. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Johnson of Sutherlin, Oregon; daughter, Janet (Roy) Palmer of Roseburg, Oregon; daughter-in-law, Shirley Johnson; grandson, Larry (Janet) Johnson Jr., and great-grandchildren, Lynnesy and Bo Johnson all of Toledo, Oregon; sister, Susan Erickson, Springfield, Oregon; brother, Wallace (Yeh) Johnson, Glendale, Arizona; sister, Angel (Bob) Fry, Roseburg; brother, Tom (Mary) Johnson, St. Cloud, Minnesota; one step-sister; two step-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren, two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law and their spouses, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Please join in celebrating his life at 2 p.m., Sunday, August 15, 2010, at the Sutherlin Senior Center, 202 E Central. Arrangements under the direction of Taylor's Family Mortuary, 541-679-6983.
