Portlandville,Nov.27-E.B.Monroe,63 years old,died at his home here at 8:15 last evening,following an illness of over six months from cancer.
Mr.Monroe was born at Sharon,December 18,1866,and spent 30 years of his life in the town of Milford,where he followed his trade of horse-shoeing.He was noted for his progressive spirit and during his term of office as town clerk for the past 13 years was continuously on the lookout for ways in which to serve the community.
For many years he was active in the work of the Methodist Episcopal church in Portlandville,and of the Order of Maccabees. In the latter organization,he was affiliated with Tent No.654 at Milford,and members of the tent will act as bearers at the funeral service.
The surviving relatives are his wife,Mrs.Mira Monroe;two daughters,Mrs.M.Quick of Portlandville and Mrs.L.Renalls;four sons,Rodney and Roy Monroe of Portlandville,and George and Leon J.Monroe of Cornwall;a brother,George F.Monroe of Cooperstown,and a half sister,Miss Bessie Monroe of Richmodville.
Rev.C.J.Dempsey of Portlandville and Rev.Mr.Bridges of Oneonta will officiate at the funeral,which is to beheld at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Portlandville Methodist church.
FUNERAL OF E.B.MONROE
Funeral services of the late E.B.Monroe were held Sunday with a prayer at the house at 1:30 p.m. and services at the Methodist Episcopal Church at 2 o'clock. The services were largely attended despite the inclement weather.The bearers were members of the Maccabees of Milford,who attended in a body,as did the town board of Milford,of which Mr. Monroe was town clerk.
The services were conducted by Rev.C.J.Dempsey,pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church,and Rev.E.R.D.Briggs,a former pastor and friend of the deceased. Many beautiful floral tributes bespoke the esteem in which he was held. Burial was in Pine Grove cemetery in Portlandville.
