Death: Between January and March, 1780; near Allentown, Macungie Township, Northampton County (now Lehigh), Pennsylvania, USA

Parents: Johannes Thurni born 10 Jul 1670 in Bätterkinden, a small village in Canton Bern, Switzerland. He was apprenticed to the stone masons trade. In 1702 he married a young woman from Zielenbach, Canton Bern whose name was Anna Eva Schneider. She was born about 1672 in Zielenbach, Bern Canton, Switzerland and died 24 Mar 1742 in Rieschweiler, Sudwestpfalz, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. Johannes Thurni died 22 Sep 1718 Rieschweiler, Sudwestpfalz, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.

Immigration: He arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 3 December 1740 on the Ship Samuel having sailed from Rotterdam, Germany. The ship was captained by Hugh Percy. Two of his brothers followed him to PA, Peter in 1741 and Henry in 1743. Because of the English pronunciation of Thurny/i, he became known as Daniel Dorney.

His two eldest sons, John & Daniel, were named executors. Under the provisions of the will, John and Daniel were to receive the "plantations" for 1700 pounds. They were paid 800 pounds, and his heirs each received 100 pounds.

In addition, there is an original document on file at the Lehigh County Historical Society, Allentown,PA, dated 26 April 1786, which was signed by both John Dorney and Daniel Dorney (sons & executors of the last will & testament of Daniel Dorney Sr.. dec'd late of Macungie Township), related to the settling of this estate.

Interesting connections: Dorney Park was established in 1884, the land purchased by Solomon Dorney in 1860 where he created a fish hatchery, was renamed "Dorney's Trout Pond and Summer Resort". Solomon's Thurny ancestor was Daniel's brother Henry. Henry also figures prominently in this area around Allentown, having been the first owner of the tavern White Hall Inn, now known as King George Inn.
