Gonzalez was Americanista - Friend of the Americans All His Life

The largest individual owner of land in the archipelago and one of its wealthiest agriculturists, Don Francisco Gonzalez, owner of the Esperanza hacienda in Pagasinan, died yesterday. The death of the wealthy hacendero took place at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ildefonso Villareal, wife of Dr. Villareal, major in the medical corps of the Philippine national guard. Practically all of his children were present at the death bed. one son, Miguel Ernesto, however, is enroute to the United States.

Don Francisco Gonzalez, an intimate friend of General MacArthur and Smith, as well as Spanish general and governor generals, was an ardent Americanista, but during his life took no part in polities. Born at Baliuag, Bulacan, his father a major in the Spanish army, Don Francisco moved to Pangasinan in the early fifties as manager of the Hacienda Esperanza. The estate comprises some 39,000 hectares, and includes the municipalities of Santa Maria, Santo Tomas, Rosales and San Quintin, extending through the provinces of Tarlac, Nueva Ecija and Pagasinan.

Progressive beyond his day, the Spanish hacienda manager soon turned the bosque into cultivated fields, acquiring property of his own at the same time. The original owners, desiring to return to Spain, sold the vast property to Don Francisco. A man of exceptional character, he ruled by example of right living rather than by force. One of his peculiarities was that he never loaned money for interest, although his pocketbook was always open to the needy. He built a beautiful residence in the suburbs of Bautista, which was like a home to visiting or touring Americans and other friends. He lived to see his great-great grand children living on the hacienda.

His sons have been prominent in business and politics, while his daughters have married well-known citizens. Senator Matias Gonzalez, formerly representative to the Assembly of Pangasinan, is his eldest son, while Joaquin, Guadalupe and Ramon Ernesto are actively engaged in managing the affaris of the hacienda. They all make their home in Bautista as does his daughter Ramona Gonzalez y Favis, wife of former fiscal Favis of the Mountain province, now practicing law in Pangasinan. Another daughter, Victoria, is the wife of Captain Ira L Davis, of the National Guard; another, Aurera, is the wife of ex-representative Ilagan of Tariac; while another, Cristina, is the wife of Mr. Schenke, a prominent Swiss hacendero of Alcala. Don Francisco personally managed the affairs of the hacienda until some eight years ago, and for the past four years has made his home with his daughter, wife of Major Villareal.

Services will be at the Cementerio del norte on Saturday afternoon.
