James R. Hughes of McHenry Memorial services for James R. Hughes, 76, formerly of Lake Zurich for 40 years, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, at the First United Methodist Church, 3717 W. Main St., McHenry, with the Rev. Jan Parsons-Comerford officiating. Born Feb. 20, 1927, in Barrington, he died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at his home. Inurnment will be private. James had resided with his daughter in McHenry for the past year. He was an Army veteran, and while stationed in Germany, he met and married his wife Edith. They were married in Nordenham Germany on July 8, 1952. He was employed by Exxon Chemical of Lake Zurich for over 25 years before retiring in 1992. James was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, and was proud to have maintained his sobriety for the past 22 years. His favorite pastimes included fishing, listening to country music and traveling to the riverboat. James also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, and also visited the European destinations of Germany, Bavaria and Austria. He was a "people" person and enjoyed meeting and conversing with people. James is survived by his children, Uwe Lloyd (Claudia) Hughes of McHenry, Fred (Debbie) Hughes of Manchester, Md. and Mary (Paul) Dougherty of McHenry; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Jim) Termanas of Lake in the Hills, Ronald Hughes of Seviersville, Tenn., Robin Hughes of Silver Spring, Md. and Kaitlin and Emma Dougherty of McHenry; his great-grandchildren, Taylor and James Termanas, and Renee Hughes; his sister, Sue (Bob) Sanders of Lakemoor; his sister-in-law, Martha Hughes of Marengo; and by his loving companion, Percy. He was preceded in death by his his wife, Edith, who passed away Jan. 11, 2002; his parents, Lloyd W. Hughes and Elenor Hughes (nee Kronke); his brother, Stanley Hughes; and by his sister, Marion Weseman. Visitation will be held from noon until the time of services at 1 p.m. Saturday, at the church. Arrangements were made by George R. Justen & Son Funeral Home, McHenry. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northeastern Illinois, 410 S. Hager Ave., Barrington, IL 60010.
