Betty J. Bush Wessel, 89, of Freeport died on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Provena St. Joseph Nursing Center, Freeport..

Betty was born on June 20, 1922, in Freeport, she was the daughter of Gustave and Clara Kampmeier Bush. She married Roy Wessel on June 20, 1942, and he died on March 20, 1972.

She graduated from Freeport High School and attended Rockford College.

Betty was a life-long active member of St. John United Church of Christ. She operated the House and Garden Shop and then worked at C.H. Little for 18 years.

She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. She was active in the RSVP program, and Tau Alpha Circle.

Surviving are three children, Sandy (Dennis) Maves of Lakewood, Colo., Douglas (Debbie) Wessel of Eau Claire, Wis., and Dan (Pam) Wessel of Freeport; one sister, Marilyn Clark of Hartsville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren, Lisa (Adam Szofran) Maves, Laurie (Troy Coon) Maves, Sara, Meghan, and Aaron Wessel, Jennifer (Jake) Young, Andrea and Laura Wessel, Lonny (Patti) Boeke, and Kelli Boeke; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and infant son.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, at St. John United Church of Christ. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum, Freeport. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church.

A memorial fund has been established.
