Richard Prater was the oldest son, thus was heir to the major parts of his fathers estates and those purchased for him by his father before his father's death.Son of George Prater (1513, Inglesham, Wiltshire, England d. 15 Jun 1564, Nunney, Somerset, England) and Jane Plott (b. 1515, Blewbury Manor, Blewbury, Berkshire, England, UK d. 1587, Latton, Wiltshire, England).

Richard, being the oldest son, inherited from his father Nunney Castle and the family Manors of Nunney, Glaston, Lighe, Trotoxhill and Sharpshawe, all of which are in Somerset, and lands from his father in Cryklade, Chelworth, and Calcote. Also included in these holdings were 40 farms with dwellings and serfs. He further inherited 30 farms wihout buildings, and about 4000 acres of meadow and timberlands, a teniment in Oxford, and many businesses which included mills, wool processing centers and "dovecotes" which was basically a dove or pigeon coop.

His home was at Nunney Castle, a tradionally castle with a moat around it. He was living there when he died in 1580. The castle was built in 1373 by John De La Mere. The castle was captured by Fairfax, one of Cromwell's commanders, in 1645 and was partially destroyed so as to make it "indefenseable".

Richard was the father of a son, George Prater, who is buried with him in the All Saint's Church - sometimes called the Nunney Chapel.
