Arend Balster, Jr.,82,died at the John McDonald Hospital, Monticello,on Wednesday morning, October 27, 1976. The funeral services were held Friday afternoon, October 29, 1976,at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello, with military Honors presented by the Monticello Drill Team. The Rev. Harvey O. Gilbertson officiated at the services.
Arend Balster, Jr. was born on May 9, 1894,near Scotch Grove, the son of John Christopher and Gesena Heyen Balster. He received his early education in the Scotch Grove rural schools. Mr. Balster entered into business with his father until his father's death in 1914 and then established Balster Wholesale Farm Equipment in Scotch Grove.
Arend Balster, Jr. and Minnie Hedden were married on December 12, 1917 and became members of the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church in Monticello. The couple made their home in Scotch Grove. In 1918 Mr. Balster enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War I. He returned to his home and business until 1966 when he retired due to ill health. For thirty four years, Mr. Balster had served his community as Post Master.
He is survived by his wife, Minnie; one son, Leslie M. Balster, Scotch Grove; one brother, Robert H. Balster, Phoenix, Arizona; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Honorary bearers were Cecil Goettsch, Louis Morf, James Maurice, John Shover, John Maurice. J.E. Heiserman, David Cuckeler and Harold Murphy. Casket bearers were James Stadtmueller, J.F. Honn, Robert Buol, Robert E. Balster, Lyle Tobiason, Roy Folkerts, Harold Ford and Abbott Mayer.
