OBITUARY -OMAHA World-Herald Newspaper 10-5-2005
ADLER—Arthur, the patriarch of the Adler family in Omaha, passed away peacefully after a prolonged illness at the Blumkin Home on October 3, 2005. His wife, Sis, was at his side as she had been everyday of their marriage of 66 years. Born in Bialystock, Poland in 1913, Art and his mother joined his father in Omaha in 1920 where Adler's Bakery was in its inception at 1722 North 24th Street. Art literally learned and built the bakery business from the ground up. At 12, he was on the delivery truck, and by the time he was 16 he was driving the routes himself. Art and Sis were married in 1939, and in rapid succession they became proud parents of three daughters, Bobbie (Epstein), Kathy (Liberman) and Carole (Shovers). They still talk to at least one, and often all of them every day. There are 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, who also remain in daily contact. It was sometimes said that Adler's Baker had become Adler's Bed and Breakfast.
After his family, he had a great love of the game of baseball. Always an athlete since his days as a basketball guard at Tech High, Art kept himself in shape. In 1985 he went to Yankees fantasy camp where he met and talked with stars like Mickey Mantle and Whitney Ford. He was older then than their combined ages, and he entertained them with his personal recollections and first hand knowledge of the game. Art continued to "train" and he was still running local 5 and 10 k's until retiring his shoes at 75. He went to the JCC regularly well into his 80's. He was a fixture at Nebraska home games. He had been a loyal fan for 75 years. Then, as he lamented "my legs just gave out".
He loved his family most of all. He was "Pop" to everyone. The simple things of life gave him the most pleasure, and his twinkling eyes matched his warm smile. We all miss him, but he will remain a part of our lives. His jersey has been retired. Survived by his wife, Sis; his children, Bobbie and Bob Epstein, Kathy and Keith Liberman and Carole and Andy Shovers; 9 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren;d 4 nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be at Beth El Cemetery at 1:00 PM Thursday, October 6, 2005.
