Died at the California P.E.O. Retirement Home in San Jose, Saturday, January 25, 2003. She had just celebrated her 95th birthday. Born January 7, 1908 in Sioux City, IA to Dr. George and Myrtle Fairbanks Lanning. Her parents and siblings, George and Harriet, preceded her in death.

A long time resident of Sioux Falls, SD, Betty married Warren Walsh in 1932 and they added three daughters to their family. In 1951 they settled in Ames, IA. Warren Walsh died in 1954.

In 1957 Betty married Capt. Wm. Drane USN, stationed at Iowa State University as director of Naval ROTC. When that duty ended the family moved to Califonia for Capt. Drane's final navy assignment and settled permanently in Santa Rosa. They lived in Santa Rosa for the next 38 years. Bill Drane died in 1997, and in December that year Betty moved to San Jose to be close to her daughters and their families.

Betty, who enjoyed home arts and was an incredible seamstress, was also a devoted volunteer and gave her time to many organizations. One of these was the P.E.O. Sisterhood to which she had joined in 1928. She was very proud of her affiliation with P.E.O. and the celebration of her 75th anniversary of membership just 2 weeks before she died.

Betty is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Ginny (Patrick) D'Angelo, Mary Walsh (Ross) Hunt (daughter Barbara died in 1976); her two step-daughters, Donna Segal of NC and Margi Delbridge of VA; her six grandchildren, Elizabeth Nazarenus, Susan Galindo, Douglas Nazarenus, Sara Kate D'Angelo, Christopher Hunt and Patrick Hunt; her thirteen step-grandchildren, Michael D'Angelo, Tim D'Angelo, Sean D'Angelo, Leigh Parsons, Leslie Purcell, Lynn Segal, Neil Segal, David Delbridge, Scott Delbridge, Earl Powderll, David Powdrell, Tom Powdrell and Doug Powdrell, and her 26 great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Service on Saturday, February 8th at 11:30 a.m. at St. Edward's Episcopal Church, 15040 Union Avenue (at Hwy. 85) San Jose. Inurnment will be in Sioux Falls, SD. The family respectfully requests memorial contributions to the California P.E.O. Home, San Jose Unit, 10 Kirk Avenue, San Jose, CA 95127.
