Dr. David E. Herrick, 88, died at home in Bowie, MD on Oct. 12. Born in Argentine, Kansas July 30, 1925 to Arthur and Ethel (Wiscoskie),Herrick was reared in Kansas and New Jersey.

During WWII he served as an Army MP in the European and Pacific theatres. A 1951 graduate of veterinary medicine from Kansas State University, Herrick married Anne Seaton Milliken, a Washburn University graduate and vocalist, in Topeka, and set up private practice in Meriden, KS. In 1960 he joined the Federal Government and was stationed at the US/Canadian Port of Raymond, Montana, and lived with his wife and three children in the nearby town of Plentywood. In 1965 he was accepted into the Federal Government's Veterinary Administrative Program that led to his appointment to Chief Staff Officer for Import-Export services in Hyattsville, MD. Before retiring in 1990, Dr. Herrick was instrumental in developing Federal regulations in disease control in animal transport, directed new quarantine programs to control Foot and Mouth disease, and oversaw development of export programs of livestock and poultry to overseas markets. Herrick and his wife were married for 55 years until her death in 2008. He is survived by son Thomas Herrick and daughter-in-law Laura Lee Cundiff of Versailles , KY, son James Herrick of Pasadena, MD, daughter Virginia Herrick O'Hara and son-in-law Christopher O'Hara, and grandsons Evan and Peter O'Hara of West Chester, PA. Visitation and internment will be held on October 19 at 1:00 at Maple Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery in Kansas City, KS. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Wounded Warrior Project or The World Wildlife Fund.
