Bennie Wayne Akers (Ben), 67, of Clovis, NM, went home to be with The Lord, on Sunday, July 17, 2011, in Ft. Worth, TX, with his family at his side.
Ben was born in Clovis, NM, on October 22, 1943, to Benjamin O. and Lorene Akers. He was a loving family man and friend. He attended school in Clovis until joining the Navy in 1960, where he continued his education by receiving his associates degree as a Medical Technologist and Corpsman. He married Norma Nadine Kenemore on August 17, 1963, also in Clovis, NM. After which time, he and Norma raised three sons while he continued his career in the Navy until 1981. After Ben retired from the Navy, he and Norma moved the family back to Clovis, where he became a funeral director and worked at Steed-Todd Funeral Home. In 1992, he and his family moved to Las Cruces, NM, when he was offered the opportunity to manage Graham Mortuary, a family owned business since 1912. He lived in Las Cruces and made many friends until his retirement in October 2007. Upon his retirement, he and Norma were able to travel in their RV full time, going wherever and whenever they chose.
Ben was preceded in death by his momma and daddy; his father-in-law, George W. Kenemore; mother-in-law, Mary Price Kenemore, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and a niece.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Akers of their home; three sons, Kevin (Luann) Akers of Ft. Worth, TX, Lance (Kelly) Akers of Farmington, NM, and Greg Akers of Bloomfield, NM; one brother, Alvin (Ann) Akers of Anza, CA; two sisters, Loretta (Sid) Turner of Clovis, NM, and Willafaye Nelson of Mesa, AZ; 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandsons, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The Family will be available for a time of fellowship and story swapping (and Ben said there should by laughter) on Friday, July 22, 2011, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at New Life Assembly of God, 517 W. 21st Street, Clovis, NM.
Memorial servies will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at 1:00 PM also at New Life Assembly of God. Pastor Dereck Owen will officiate with Pastor Scott Caldwell assisting.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a church ministry or charity of your choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Muffley Funeral Home 1430 N. Thornton St, Clovis, NM 88101, 575-762-4435, www.muffleyfuneralhome.com
