This pioneer Baptist minister came to Catoosa County, then Walker, about 1840. He served churches in the area of Tunnel Hill, Graysville and Peavine, Ga. He was born in Virginia but moved to East Tenn in the early 1800s.
He joined the state militia of Tennessee and was with Jackson in his victories at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, where he was severely wounded. After the close of the War of 1812, he returned to Tennessee and later moved to Georgia.
An honor was paid to this old patriot and "soldier of the cross" when a bronze marker was placed at his grave in Peavine Cemetery by the volunteer chapter United Daughters of 1812, of Chattanooga. General Andrew Jackson was first to be honored in Tennessee, and his loyal and devoted follower, Sgt. William Davis, was the first to have his grave so marked in Georgia. The tablet was unveiled by five of his great grandchildren on May 6, 1916.
Mr Davis was the great grandfather of Mrs. H E Wyatt of this county; also of Frank Henderson, Sr. The wife of Mr Davis is buried in the old cemetery at Graysville, probably having died while he was preaching near there.
Mother of:
Winifred Brickey Davis Henderson, buried Peavine Cemetery, Walker County, Ga.
