Oscar along with his family left Rochester, NY 10 Apr 1838 for the state of MI. They took the canal to Buffalo and made Detroit via Lake Erie, the freight and passage costing $75. They arrived 25 Apr and settled in what is now Eckford. In the following month the family moved to Battle Creek where a farm was purchased.

Private CO H 96th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted 22 August 1862. He was a 5-foot-8 farmer with gray eyes and brown hair. Oscar was "discharged for disability" 4 February 1863.
