Son of Hilan Bolon (often found spelled Bolen) and Margaret CALHOUN* both born in Virginia, he married Marian B. SHOTWELL, October 28, 1855, Belmont, Ohio.

*First born child to Hilan and Margaret, middle name could be Calhoun.

The 1860 census shows them with two children Charles S and Ida M.

John served in the Civil War, Union, enlisting in 1861, Company D, 43rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteers where he became Sargeant. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in 1864, Company C, 60th regiment, when he was wounded and lost a leg, discharged in November 1864.

From 1866 to 1869 he was recorder of Belmont County, and became U.S. revenue gauger,inspector and storekeeper for 7 years.

1870 census lists only one child Mary E, age 9.

Two daughters appear on the 1880 census Eva M and Minnie, John's occupation revenue gauger - storekeeper.


His death certificate indicates he was a farm laborer.


His wife Marian/Mary died before 1900 possibly 1885 unknown burial location.
