Merced Pedro Barbosa
(September 24, 1925 - October 10, 2013)


Merced Pedro Barbosa, 88, of St. Joseph, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2013 at his home.
He was born September 24, 1925 in St. Joseph, son of Francisca "Frances" and Mauricio Barbosa.

He attended the Our Lady of Guadalupe Grade School and then graduated from Christian Brothers High School.

He married Victoria Guardado on November 28, 1947, and she preceded him in death in October 1993.

He served in the Navy and is a veteran of the World War II. He retired from the St. Joseph Fire Department as a Captain of Station 8 at 33rd and Mitchell. He also owned and operated the Barbosa & Sons Awning Service. He always had a second job to provide for his family.

He enjoyed praying the rosary with his brothers and sisters on Monday nights, and taking his entire family on a Disney Cruise to the Bahamas on for his 80th birthday. He loved big band music, dancing and singing and was an avid horse shoe player.

Merced was a founding member of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Men's Club, the Mexican Fiesta as an organizer, and Saint Patrick's Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by wife, Victoria Barbosa; his parents; a brother, Pelan E.C. Barbosa; and a sister, Lupe Cathcart.

Survivors include three sons, Simon Barbosa and wife Lou Anne, Helena, Mo.; Ron Barbosa and wife Linda and Vincent Barbosa, St. Joseph; two daughters, Juanita Stewart and husband Lonnie, St. Joseph; and Rosemary Dixon, Clarksdale, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Brett Dixon, Heather Seiter, Jessica Stewart, Sara Brown, Joseph Barbosa, Kathleen Barbosa and Michael Barbosa; 10 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Jesse Barbosa and wife Wanda, St. Joseph; Jason Barbosa, Maryville, Mo.; Faustino Barbosa, St. Joseph; and Rick Barbosa and wife Norma, Virginia Beach, Va.; six sisters, Bernie Ceglenski and husband Mike, Helena; Julia Burris, St. Joseph; Christina Torres and husband Carlos, Austin, Texas; Mary Helen White, Baton Rouge, La.; and Ruth Curtin, St. Joseph; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

Merced was a great friend, brother, father and grandfather, and he will be sadly missed by all his family.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, October 14, 2013, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Fr. Richard Rocha Celebrant.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Sunday, at the Rupp Funeral Home. The rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Sunday and the family will receive friends until 7 p.m. at the Rupp Funeral Home.

The entombment will be at the Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Memorials are requested to the St. Patrick's Catholic Church or the Hands of Hope Hospice.
