George Barger, my gr-gr-grandfather, was born in 1832 to Abraham Barger and Ann Mahala Bennett. He married Mary Elizabeth Grove in April of 1855 and had two sons ... Charles and Theophilris.
On August 17th, 1862, he enrolled in the Union Army at Point of Rocks, Frederick County, Maryland ... six months after the death of his wife. He was mustered into Company H of the 1st Maryland Potomac Home Brigade (PHB) as a private on August 31st. Shortly after being mustered in, he was captured by the Confederates at Harpers Ferry on September 15, 1862. Apparently sent to Alexandria VA in November 1862. His "Prisoner of War" record says "Absent without leave from C P Md Nov 7/62".
After returning to his unit, he participated in the Battle of Gettysburg. While defending Culp's Hill he was shot in the right lung on July 3, 1863. He died the next day at the 1st Division, Twelfth Corps Hospital (the George Bushman farm near Rock Creek).
After his death, his two children were brought up by his mother, Mahala, in Petersville, Maryland.
