Sarah Elizabeth Wilson was born in April 1848 in Indiana, Washington, Noble, to John A Wilson and his wife Mary Ann Shelly. On October 10, 1869, she married Samuel B Rice in Shellsburg, Benton County, Iowa. They moved to Waterloo, Black Hawk, Iowa, the next year. In 1883 Sarah's only child, Florence, was born. She shows up in the Iowa state census of 1895 as a 12-year old daughter living with her parents in Julien Township, Ward 3 of Dubuque, Iowa. However, by 1900 according to the federal census she was deceased. Sarah and her husband Sam lived out their lives in Dubuque, Iowa, on Clay Street. Sam died in 1910 and the 1915 state census for Iowa shows that Sarah, a 66-year old widow, was a member of the Congregational Church in Dubuque.
