The birth of Thomas Samuel Sheils on 22 February 1892, at Corraskea, Dawsonsgrove, Co. Monaghan, was registered at Cootehill, Co. Cavan, on 9 March 1892, by his father
In the 1901 census, the Sheils family were living at Corraskea, Anny, Co. Monaghan. [Corraskea lies between Ballybay and Clones.]

No member of the family could be found in the 1911 census.
He was a military passenger onboard the Royal Mail Ship "Leinster" which was sunk by torpedoes from a German Submarine, whilst enroute from Kingstown [now Dun Laoghaire], Co. Dublin, to Holyhead, Anglesey, North Wales, on the morning of 10th October 1918.
