CAPT. JOHN E. GILBERT
News has been received here if the death of Capt. John E. Gilbert, in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Friday. His death was due to a stroke of paralysis. Capt. Gilbert was a resident of Nashville and was one of the most prominent businessmen in the City. He went to Florida two weeks ago for his health and in recent letters was reported to be improving greatly. The deceased was the son of Maj. David Gilbert of Limestone County, Ala.,and was in his 70th year.
Capt. Gilbert entered business with Robert J. Gordon, of Pulaski, soon after leaving school. He Joined the Confederate Army soon after the outbreak of the war and served through the entire conflict, retiring with the rank of Captain. In company with Mr. Gordon he came to Nashville in 1866 and organized the firm of Gilbert, Parkes, and Co., cotton merchants. He was the originator of the Nashville Woolen Mills, which began operation in 1882.
Capt. Gilbert married Miss Addie Sikes, daughter of Capt. Jesse Sikes of Rutherford County, in 1868. His wife and 3 children-J. Sikes and Charles N. and Mrs C. T. Boyd survive. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Leonard Parkes of Nashville. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
The remains will be brought to this City. The funeral will be announced later., but owing to the illness of Mrs. Gilbert it will be private.

Notes per P. Gilbert- Rutherford County records show a marriage date of Nov. 19, 1867.

His full brothers included George A. Gilbert, Thomas Henry Gilbert, and Dr. Van Buren Gilbert of Limestone County Al. All served in the Confederate Army like their brother John E.
