She met Delbert Kirschenman the year she taught in an 8-grade country school in South Dakota. She and Delbert were married on June 10, 1949 in Luverne, Minnesota. They stayed several months at Delbert's folks place in South Dakota about 12 miles southeast of Menno. Then they moved to a farm house closer to Menno, South Dakota.
Two daughters and a son were born; another daughter Marla Joanne was stillborn. In 1955 they went to visit Violet's mom and sister in Illinois and decided to stay. Three more daughters and three more sons were born. Nine children grew to adulthood.
Violet retired in 1990 after 10 years as a nurse's aide. Delbert had retired five years before. They bought a motor home and started traveling. They've been to most states and Canada.
Violet & Delbert celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1999. At that time they had 28 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Violet celebrated her 80th birthday with many family members on September 27, 2008. At that time she had 9 children, 28 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Her sisters Norma and Ruby and brother Lyle attended the celebration.
In January 2012 her son Ken was diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive type of cancer. He passed away March 2, 2012 at the age of 60. He was honored with a military service at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery in Moline, Illinois.
Violet enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting and doing computer work. She loved making personal quilts for family members.
Violet passed away at her home on April 9, 2014 at the age of 85. Her favorite hymns, "'Tis Not In Vain To Yield" and "It Pays To Serve Jesus", were sung by everyone during the service. Casket bearers were her grandchildren. She is buried next to Delbert in Fairmount Cemetery.
At the time of her death she was survived by 5 daughters, 3 sons, 29 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, 1 sister, and 1 brother. She was preceded in death by her husband Delbert Kirschenman, son Kenneth Kirschenman, 4 great-grandchildren, and sister Norma Hunt.
