Calvin Harvey Iron, 62, of Sheridan, formerly of Lodge Grass, passed away Oct. 2, 2013, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center.


He was born June 20, 1951, in Crow Agency, a son of McKinley Iron Sr. and Nathelle Young Swallow. He was a descendent of Chief Pretty Eagle, who grew up in St. Xavier and received his education in Lodge Grass and Flandreau Indian School. Following his education, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Lexington before receiving his honorable discharge.


He married Patricia Enos and the couple made their home in Lodge Grass. He was a member of the Pentecostal Church, Greasy Mouth Clan and was a child of the Ties the Bundle and the Piegan Clans. He worked for the Crow Agency IHS Hospital as a cook, before becoming disabled due to an auto accident. Calvin was especially fond of his aunt, Rita Snell.


His father; wife Patricia; sister Rhoda Iron; stepsisters Lois Jefferson and Patricia Arenallo; brothers, Lester Jefferson Jr., Apple and Reynard Caplett, Wallace and Arnold Leider; grandparents, Rhoda Blanket Bull, Harvey Young Swallow, Albert Iron, Helen Crooked Arm, Genevieve Conger, Agnes Holds; aunts Alvina Stewart, Joanie Holds, Rita Don't Mix, Emma Beads, Evelyn and Doreen Old Elk; and uncles Enos Iron and Jacob Big Hair preceded Calvin in death.


Survivors include his mother; his daughter Catlin Iron; sons Albert, Clark, Jeremy and Calvin J. Iron; seven grandchildren; his sisters, Tina (Conrad) Alden, Alberta and Alice Iron, Kristen Jefferson, Valerie (Aaron) Fighter, Haroldine Moss, Sharon Pergoy, Cathy (Buster) Gardner, Cheryl (Thomas) White Clay, Mary (Lane) Simpson, Christine (Dale) Good Luck, Mary (Dwayne) White and Colleen Caplett, Jackie and Mary Blacksmith; stepsisters Violet Wolf Black, Susan Bird in Ground, Mary and Theda Jefferson; brothers, Clinton (Corliss), Faron (Rose) and McKinley (Valerie) Iron Jr., Rueben (Kathlene) Yellowtail, Nathan Young Swallow, Darwin Bull Shows, Henry, Harold (Tara), Irvin (Carla) and Truman (Elabeth) Jefferson, Archie Flat Lip, Cortney, Michael, Albert and Alvin Stewart Jr., Sharone (Latonna) Curley, Calvin and Cyrus (Annie) Leider; aunts Sylvia Moss, Doris Hill, Velma Fitzpatrick, Mary Helen and Iola Medicine Horse; uncles John Holds, Dennis, Tronson and Al Big Hair; as well as his extended family including the Iron, Stewart, Old Elk, Bird in Ground, Holds the Enemy, Bull in Sight, Covers Up, Jefferson, Don't Mix, Springfield, Red Star, Bull Shows, LaForge and Crooked Arm families.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, in the Bullis Funeral Chapel.


Interment with military honors will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Hardin, MT.
