James, 2nd Baronet Stanhope, was the son of James Motgomery I and Margaret Scott. In 1800 he served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Peeblesshire, Scotland. He succeeded as 2nd Baronet Montgomery, on April 2, 1803, when his father passed away. On August 1, 1804, he married first to Elizabeth Douglas and they had three children. About 1816, he married second to Helen Graham, and they had five children. He died on May 27, 1839.
