Last, he served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 40th Pennsylvania Emergency Troops, a regiment that was raised in June 1863 to meet the thread of the Confederate Invasion during the Gettysburg Campaign. He served until his muster out in July 1863, when the threat subsided.
