Civil War Union Army Officer. He served first during the Civil War as a Private in the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Heavy Artillery, a three month unit organized in April 1861. It served duty in Fort Delaware until their enlistment expired on August 5, 1861. He then received a commission of Captain and commander of Company C, 106th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Last, he served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 40th Pennsylvania Emergency Troops, a regiment that was raised in June 1863 to meet the thread of the Confederate Invasion during the Gettysburg Campaign. He served until his muster out in July 1863, when the threat subsided.
