Cornelius was the son of Zachariah and Margaret Bedell of New Jersey. His family moved to Ohio, where his father drowned in the Ohio Canal in 1831 and his mother died in 1838. Cornelius married Amelia Ann Sayer (maiden name unknown) in Miami county, Ohio in 1847. Ann had one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Sayer, b. 1841, from her previous marriage.
He was the scout for the Bedell family, going to Kosciusko County, Indiana, where his brother, Henry and his sister, Epheline Warden, joined him by 1850. Scouting again, he went to Marion County, Iowa, and his sister joined him there by 1860. By 1880, Lizzie was age 39 and they had two wards living with them; Wm Thompson, age 9, and Mary Jane Hoskins, age 11. After his wife, Ann, died in 1886, he was married to this ward, Mary Jane, age 18, at Holt, Nebraska, in 1887. They had a daughter, Nellie M. yet that year.
Cornelius went to Hardin county, Iowa in about 1890, and lived the last year of his life with his sister, Epheline, at the home of his nephew, Florentine Lake.
This biography differs from that of Aunt June's Journal (written by Elsie June Lake Nuenfeldt 1891-1995) in the details of Mary Elizabeth and Mary Jane, but this version has better source support. Submitted by Steven Lake 47893395.
