Grant was born in Findlay, Ohio September 23,1872 to Charles H.Johnson and Lizzie Warner Johnson. Grant began his notable career in professional baseball in 1894 with the Findlay Sluggers, a simi pro team, where he earned his nick name "Home Run" after it was said he belted sixty homers during the season. He co founded and played for the Page Street Giants in Adrian, Michigan until the team folded in 1898. Grant moved to Chicago where he played for the Chicago Columbia Giants. The following season her moved to the Chicago Unions. In 1903-1904 Grant played for the Cuban X-Giants, winning the Eastern Championship in 1903. With the Philadelphia Giants in 1905-1906, the team won championships both seasons.
Grant continued to play for various teams until his retirement at age 58 in 1932. He lived the remainder of his life in Buffalo, New York working for New York Central Railroad.
