Captain Burton was the pilot of a F-51D Mustang night fighter with the 40th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 35th Fighter-Interceptor Wing. On October 2, 1950, while on a combat mission, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire. He bailed out 4 miles northeast of Pyongyang, North Korea. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on December 31, 1954.

Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
