Juanita attended Cameron schools through high school and graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri. Her passion for music, dancing, and sports went hand in hand as she went on to teach music and physical education in both Cameron and Lawrence, Kansas. She married her childhood sweetheart Col. Gene Thomas Pemberton on December 24, 1949. They began a wonderful life together and traveled the world with the U.S. Air Force with overseas posts in Japan and Germany and throughout the United States. Col. Pemberton's posting to McConnell Air Force Base moved them to Wichita, Ks in 1964 and this would be their last station together. Gene was shot down in combat in the Vietnam War and was listed MIA for many years. His body was recovered and returned to Cameron for burial in 1974. Juanita was an inspiration to many with her faith and strength during this time. She devoted her life to taking care of her children and making the lives of those around her just a little bit more of a party! Juanita spent countless hours at Epworth Methodist Church leading the high school youth group, participating on church council, attending the Fireside Sunday School Class, and as a wedding coordinator. She also gave her time and talents to the Retired Officers Association at McConnell AFB. She will be remembered for organizing Retiree Day each fall and her help in establishing the Memorial Walk to honor fallen soldiers. One of her best roles was as "Gran" to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Juanita was truly a remarkable woman who has left her imprint on many lives; her family and friends will cherish the magic she put into everyday of her life and theirs!
