He was the son of John Hasting Alexander and Maggie White Alexander of Kannapolis, Cabarrus County, North Carolina. His siblings were Floretta Maggie Alexander Foster, PFC John William Alexander, and Thomas H Alexander. He is honored by his country and is buried in the Ardennes ABMC Cemetery overseas, in Belgium, SSgt Charles H Alexander.
He enlisted in the service 13 August 1942 at Camp Croft, South Carolina. At the time he was single, had completed four years of high school, and was a textile worker in his civil life.

On a bombing mission 25 February 1944, B-17G #42-31664 departed from the air base at Foggia, Italy to a target at Regensburg, Germany. Weather was clear that day with unlimited visibility. The ship encountered enemy aircraft and was seen to break apart in the air. The plane crashed near Haarbach, south of Landshut, Germany. Several were able to bail out, however, they were captured and taken prisoner. Six men were killed from this ship. The crew members were~
