From The Austin Democrat, October 19, 1897:

Mrs. Avery Vermilya.

Mrs. Avery Vermilya, of Dexter, died yesterday at the age of 76. Mrs. Vermilya was born at Roxbury, N. Y., March 16, 1821, where she was married March 20, 1843. She came to Minnesota the same year and settled in Olmsted county, where she lived until seven years ago, when she moved to Dexter. She has had eleven children, nine sons and two daughters, all of whom are alive except David. Her husband survives her. The children are James, of Olmsted county, John, Joseph, Orvil and Ruben, all farmers in Dexter, Jesse, who is in the mercantile business in that town, and Samuel, a lawyer of Bishop, Cal., Mrs. Putnam, of Granite Falls and Mrs. Abraham Frost, of Milo, Mo. The children will all attend the mother's funeral except Samuel and Mrs. Frost, who can not arrive in time. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock in Dexter village.

Mrs. Vermilya was a woman of sterling worth, a true wife and a good mother. She was of strong Christian faith and belonged to the Baptist denomination. Although she spent but a few years of her long and useful life in Dexter, those few years were long enough to endear her to all who met her.
