Wife of Martin Kjostelsen Nyhus from the same community of Odalen, Hedmark, Norway . According to my Grandmother Mable Mattison (granddaugher of Marie and Martin) they were of the Lutheran faith. They married in 1850. In their union they had 8 children. One son, Kristoffer, stayed in Norway and one daughter died an infant in the old country . From early family knowledge handed down he died in 1869 from a lightning strike while fishing on the lake near their home. He fished and also had a job as a lumberman to support his family. His 3rd born, Renhart Mattison at the age of 13 took on his deceased fathers job as a lumberman. Marie came to the USA after her son Renhart had settled in Minnesota. Marie came over with several of her children and it has been told that Renhart saved up money from building railroads, to help many of his family to immigrate to the USA. Marie live out her old age on Martin's farm until her mental state forced him to institutionalize her at the St. Peter State Hospital, Nicolette Co., MN, She died a few months after being admitted there and was buried in St. Peter. Her name along with most of the family all changed their names from the old style of Norwegian naming. (Olsen was the surname she used in the new country)
