Rev. Dr Spence Baker was born in Wells, Minnesota and grew up in Stewartville. After attending the Bible Institute in Iowa, he was ordained in 1903 as a minister of the Society of Friends and later was ordained into the Presbyterian ministry.

He was the son of Ezakiah Baker and Melinda Herring.

Dr. Baker served pastorates in Illinois, Ohio and New Jersey before coming to Kannapolis in 1948. He retired in 1952.

He was a close friend of Dr. Billy Graham and assisted in Dr. Graham's crusades.

He is survived by his widow; a son, one brother and six grandchildren. Funeral services were in Kannapolis.
