My Esau Bass Family Tree reflects that Levi Jasper Bass is my 1st cousin 4x removed. We are descendants of Esau Bass of the American Revolution, North Carolina. Levi Jasper is described in the following book:
Bass Family History by Admiral Ivan Ernest Bass, published 1955, pp 24 & 46
Levi Jasper Bass, son of Jeremiah and Sarah Elizabeth (Phillips) Bass, was born in Marion County, Mississippi, April 29, 1832, and was killed in action at the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, June 28, 1863. Jasper Bass enlisted at Silver Creek, Mississippi, by Liutenant Weathersby, April 24, 1862 and was in the hospital at Hazlehurst, Mississippi, in June of that year. He and his brothers, James Albert [Bass] and Seaborn Esau [Bass], were in Company E, Thirty-Eight Mississippi Infantry, Confederate States Army. This regiment was organized about May 12, 1862 and the designation was changed to 38th Mississippi Mounted Infantry in early 1864 and to 38th Mississippi Cavalry in 1865.
It is tradition that when Levi Jasper Bass was mortally wounded by shrapnel in the thigh, his brother, James Albert [Bass], stopped the flow of blood with his thumb long enough for Jasper to give James Albert some last message for his family and instructions relative to the disposition of his property; when this had been done, Jasper asked his brother to remove his thumb and let him die.
Levi Jasper Bass married Martha Jane Davis, daughter of Hosea Davis, in Lawrence County, Mississippi and they had the Following issue
A. Sarah Ellen Bass
B.Jasper Newton Bass
C. Jeremiah Hosea Bass, died in infancy
