Daughter of Rev. Ernest R. Atwater and his first wife Jennie Pond Atwater, who were with the American Board of Missions.

She and her sister Mary were harbored at Shouyang, and separated from their father and step-mother [ Elizabeth (Graham) Atwater], when they and five missionaries were taken in chains and marched to the city of Taiyuan.

She died at age 10 at public execution at Taiyuan, on order of Governor Yu-Hsien.
