Traffic accidents in Riverside county began a grim 1938 list with two persons dead and five others injured.
Charles W. Jones, 69, of Indio, a pedestrian on the highway near Indio, was killed at 4:00 a.m.....Jones was almost instantly killed when struck by a truck, driven by Harry S. Smelling of Huntington park, on the highway two miles northwest of Indio. Coroner Ben F. White, who investigated the fatality at Indio last night, signed out the case as accidental. No inquest will be held, he stated.
Smelling, and others on the truck who were the only witnesses, stated that Jones suddenly appeared in the middle of the highway, running toward the truck with his hands in the air, apparently shouting. It was impossible for the heavy vehicle to be stopped in time to avoid striking the man, Smelling told the coroner. (Corona Courier - Fri., Jan. 7, 1938, pg. 1)
