The many friends of A.J. Hill were called to mourn his death which occurred on Monday, February 15th at his home in this city. Mr. Hill was born August 8th, 1829 in Shelby county Indiana, where he grew to manhood, receiving a common school education. He was married November 22, 1850 to Carolina B. Brant by who he had five sons and one daughter, all except the eldest son surviving him.

The deceased moved to Davis county Iowa in 1853 where he lived during the civil war, and was a member of the Home Guards, during that struggle, but was not a regular enlisted soldier. In 1870 he came to Republic county taking a homestead in Fairview township where he lived until 1885 when he moved to Stockton, Rooks county, Kansas, living there until 1897 when he returned to this county, making Belleville his home until the time of his death.

He joined the Protestant Methodist church before the war, of which church he remained a consistent member until about 28 years ago he embraced the Adventist faith, in which he was a firm believer at the time of his death. He was a charter member of Bloomfield Lodge I.O.O.F. state of Iowa, also charter member of Rebekah Lodge at the same place, and was a charter member of Belleville Lodge No. 96 I.O.O.F. in which he was in good standing at the time of his death.

Mr. Hill was an honest and upright man, a loyal and patriotic citizen, an active and zealous Odd Fellow and lead a consistent and exemplary Christian life. His funeral was largely attended at the M.F. church on Wednesday, Feb. 17. Rev. Slater of Smith Center delivered a very able and appropriate address after which Belleville Lodge No. 96 concluded the exercises. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the family in their sad bereavement.
