Mrs. Edith Irene Brake Murphy, age 84, of Fernandina Beach, Florida, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Morris Center for Caring at Shands of Jacksonville, Florida. She was born on Thursday January 17, 1929 in the Bear Creek Community of Cumberland County, Kentucky the daughter of the late William and Jewell Phares Brake. She was a graduating member of the 1946 Class of Cumberland County High School. On February 22, 1951, she married James Murphy. With her husband's career, they lived in various locales throughout their lives together. The Murphy's came to Fernandina Beach, Florida in 1987 as Mr. Murphy was working at Kings Bay Naval Base. After settling in Fernandina Beach they became members of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Fernandina Beach, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Ernest Brake, Ed Brake, and Eston Brake, her sisters, Anna Smith, Alta Sewell, Dorothy Elliott and Virginia Joyce Brake Smith. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, James Murphy of Fernandina Beach, Florida, their daughter, Candace "Candy" (and Mike) Downing of Moore, Oklahoma, her sister, Norma (and Peck) Scott of Jeffersonville, Indiana and her two grandchildren, Desiree Jewell and C.J. Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 21, 2013 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard with Pastor Beth Fogle-Miller officiating. Local graveside services were held on Friday Afternoon, September 27, 2013 at the Modoc Cemetery in Cumberland County, Kentucky. Local Professional services provided by Norris-New Funeral Home of Burkesville, Kentucky.
