Longtime Greenville resident Oleta Cantrell died Wednesday morning at her home. She was 79.

Memorial services will be at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 10 a.m. Friday with Rev. Phillip Gill officiating.

The daughter of Samuel Owen and Lillie May McCord Chambers, she was born Dec. 21, 1913, in Grayson County. On July 12, 1933, she married William Cantrell Jr. in Dallas.

Mrs. Cantrell was an assistant women’s editor at the Herald Banner from 1955 to 1962.

She was the first woman elected to serve as a Vestry in the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas, was past president of Episcopal Church Women and active in various civil organizations and clubs. She had been a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church since 1941.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William and Julie Cantrell of Greenville; one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Ted Sansom of Rockwall; one sister, Ellouise Cherry of Phoenix; four grandchildren, Alice Cantrell of Concord, Calif., William Cantrell IV of Dallas, April Sansom of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Laura Sansom of Rockwall; and one great-granddaughter, Sophie Dresser of Concord, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 4, 1955.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.

Services will be under the direction of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.
