Obituary for Barbi Ruth Duke

YAKIMA – Barbara "Barbi" Ruth Duke, 66, went to be with our heavenly father on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 after a long journey with Alzheimer's.

Barbi was born January 8, 1947 in Yakima, WA to A.J. and Ruth (Wagner) Thomas of Naches, WA.

As a young girl, she spent many years working at the family business, the Tea Pot Dome Service Station in Zillah. She and her brother, George Thomas, modeled for the Peter Pan Shop. Barbi graduated from Naches High School in 1965. She loved being a cheerleader and a member of the Sportsman's Day royalty. She went on to graduate from Mr. Lee's Beauty School and spent most of her working years as a hairdresser. She also worked in the nursery at Stone Church, became a traffic control flagger for construction, a caregiver for many families and was a hostess for the Oxford Suites Hotel restaurant.

Barbi lived her life full of love and compassion, always looking to see how she could help someone else. Her never ending selflessness carried through to the very end. She touched so many people throughout her life. Barbi was magnetic, connecting and touching those around her every day. She truly was special. She passed on her mother's wonderful gifts of baking and was a fabulous cook. Those who knew Barbi know she was a beautiful dancer as well. She would dance around and sing all the way up to her last days. Her free spirit will live on in us for eternity and she now gets to dance with the angels in heaven.

Barbi was preceded in death by her parents A.J. & Ruth Thomas, her two brothers Jim & Robert Thomas and her sisters Mary Elizabeth Wright and Pauline Wyles.

Barbi is survived by four children, Michelle Summers and Scott (Monalisa) Schoonover of California, Chad (Tara) Duke of Georgia and Chascidi (Tyler) White of Yakima; two brothers, George (Bettie) Thomas of Yakima and Dick (Paula) Thomas of Naches; one sister, Evelyn (Dale) Wyles of Wenatchee; twelve grandchildren, Christopher Summers (CA), Shelby Summers (CA), Anthony Schatzlein (CA), Christina Miller (CA), Tyler Schoonover (CA), Georgia, Scarlett, Bear and Jax Duke (GA), Madison and Jonathan Hennessy and Preston White (Yakima); one great-grandchild, Ryland Summers (CA).

A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, October 16th at the Lower Naches Grange Hall at 11am.

Everyone that knew and loved Barbi is encouraged to come and honor her life with us.

Barbi Duke will live on in our hearts forever.

Valley Hills Funeral Home, Yakima, WA in charge of arrangements.
