John E. "Jack" Burke, 88, of Billings, passed away at his home on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013. The son of Patrick and Mary Burke, Jack was born on June 13, 1925, in Pittsburgh, Pa.

He served his country during World War II, where, in the army, he met Shirley, his wife of 68 years.

He was proud of his successful 33-year career with Sears that progressed from salesman to store manager in five states. One of Jack and Shirley's favorite activities was celebrating their wedding anniversary with children and grandsons each July 4th with dinner at Lake Hotel, watching the parade and fishing on Yellowstone Lake.

He enjoyed fly-fishing adventures around the world with friends, as well as teaching the sport to his children and grandsons. There was usually a friendly fishing competition for the first, the biggest and the most.

Jack looked forward to waterfowl and upland bird hunting with his son, friends and his son's Labrador retrievers, Silki, Murphy and Can-Can. He was a die-hard Packers fan, attending games for many years while living in Wisconsin.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Mary (Coyne) Burke; and his brothers, Patrick, William, Charles and Martin. He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Billings; his daughter, Kathleen Burke of Billings; his son, Jack and Laurie Burke of Billings and their children, Peter of Sun Valley, Idaho, and Casey of Billings; brother Thomas of Pittsburgh and sister Theresa of Pittsburgh.

Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary, 1001 Alderson Ave. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Military honors will follow at 2 p.m. in the Yellowstone County Veteran's Cemetery.

The family wishes to express appreciation to the Rocky Mountain Hospice nurses and the Interim Healthcare aides.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the Alzheimer's Association – Montana Chapter, 3010 11th Ave. N., Billings, MT 59101; or Ducks Unlimited, 1-800-45-DUCKS.
