Excerpt from Joseph Dix' Family History (son of Mary Bland & John Dix), written in 1897:

My mother's maiden name was Mary Bland. She was born December 13th, 1783, in the parish of Easton, Huntingdon Shire, England. Her father's name was Joseph Bland and her mother's name was Mary. I think they were farmers. We have no record of grand-mother Bland's birth, but she died December 26th, 1788, in the parish of Easton Huntingdon Shire, Mother was then five years old, and I think was the only child they ever had. At that time they had a single woman living with them as a servant whose name was Elizabeth Johnson; and after grand-mother's death grand-father retained her as a housekeeper as long as he lived, and I have heard mother say, "A kind mother she was to her." She lived with mother until her death which was on November 7th, 1814.
Elizabeth Johnson

Grand-father Bland died February 24th, 1807, in the Parish of Easton Huntingdon Shire, England. We have no record of his birth. He, and I think grand-mother also, were members in the General Baptist Church...

I think father and mother were married in the year 1801. He being about 30 and she 18. This in England was regarded young for her. Neither were of the wealthy class, but she had a legacy of about 400 pounds left her by a relative, but this she could not draw until she was 21 years of age.

...Soon after mother was 21 years of age she obtained the legacy left her, and they went into the grocery business, but did not succeed well.

...Mother lost two children before leaving England, a daughter I think named Sarah, and a son named John, who was born with a veil on his face; both died in early infancy. Six lived to emigrate. Elizabeth, born August 3rd, 1803; Bland, November 30th, 1805; Samuel, born February 29th, 1808; Mary, brn (sic) July 31st, 1813; John, born May 4th, 1816; Joseph, born November 13th, 1818. All those were born in the parish of Easton in Huntingdon Shire, old England.

...I think Sir F. Maitland was governor of Upper Canada at that time. We remained in Kingston a few years and father worked in the engineer yard. Father and mother were members of the regular Baptist Church in England, but as there was not a Baptist Church in Kingston they united with the British Methodist. Here Mercy was born October 15th, 1821.

But father wanted a farm and he and his grant for land and learned the government at that time was giving land grants in the township of Marmora, he went to see it, but found it so very stony he would not accept it, and the result was he never got any land by his grant. About that time the Marmora iron ore and iron works were attracting considerable attention. I think one Hayes had the lead of them. On father's disappointment in Marmora he rented a farm on the north shore of Bay of Quinte and on the east side of Parrot Bay, then known as "Floating Bay, in Earnest Town" some twelve miles west of Kingston, for a term of eight years, and we moved to it. I think this was in the Spring of 1824...It was here Hannah Susana Dix was born, October 4th, 1825.
